A Somewhat Spooky Wreath

Halloween is only a couple of days away, so we wanted to share one more Halloween wreath project with you guys! This one is really simple, the hardest part of the project is picking your decorations!

We purchased a black faux pine wreath at Joann Fabrics with our usual coupon, and then went through the holiday sections to find some little decorations to nestle into our wreath. Once again, while we found a good chunk of our decorations in the Halloween section, quite a few were found in the Christmas section, so don't be afraid to check out the whole store to see if anything jumps out at you. Once we found our decorations, we attached them to the wreath with the thin wire you can buy at any craft store, and adjusted them until we were happy with the layout. The ribbon was easy as well, we just picked a ribbon with a wire edge and nestled in right into the wreath with the rest of the decorations. And that was it! Simple and cute, our favorite kind of project!

Halloween "So Sorry" Printables

My kids are little, so I like to go trick-or-treating with them. Not just for safety reasons, but because I just don't want to miss out on any part of the Halloweens that they actually want to spend with me! I know those years go by way too fast and all to soon they will want to do all their trick-or-treating with their friends. My husband feels the same way, so a lot of times our house is empty when trick or treaters stop by. Obviously we feel bad about that since we are out collecting candy from everyone else, so we put together a little "So sorry we've missed you" printable to hang on the door while we are out. We leave a bowl of candy outside our door and hope for the best! There may be some kids that take more than they should, but for the most part I think kids respect the fun of Halloween and limit themselves to a couple treats.

We have had the occasional year where we ended up with some leftover candy, but most years we run out while there are a few trick-or-treaters still haunting the streets. We feel bad just leaving the front door unanswered, so we put together another printable to let people know that we are out of treats for the night so we don't feel like we have to hide when trick-or-treaters come by. No matter the age of your kids, this printable is a handy one!

The printables are 8x10, feel free to grab one, or both, for yourselves!

You can find "Sorry We Missed U" here.

Black Feather Halloween Wreath

When we shared our spooky mantel the other day, it included a black feather wreath that we had made. It really was such a simple a wreath to put together that we thought we should share with you just how we did it. We don't have pictures of the whole process, but the process is simple enough that it really shouldn't be an issue.

Black Feather Halloween Wreath

Supplies
Styrofoam Wreath
Black fabric
Black Feather Boa
Decorative Holiday Picks (we think that's what they are called)

We love Joann Fabrics because they are the best in regards to allowing coupons from their competitors. We were able to get a styrofoam wreath and a black feather boa using 40% off coupons, hurray! We bought the smallest feather boa they had because we really did not want to spend a lot, but you can always splurge and get a bigger one! We knew we had a way to work around the fact that ours was small, but we'll get to that. We also picked up the decorative picks at Joann. The spiders came from the Halloween section, but the silver stars and purple spirals actually came from the Christmas section! That's a little tip we've discovered over the years, if you are willing to look at things a little differently, it's amazing how many different ways you can use them!

Okay, now to get down to assembling the wreath!

Step 1: We already had some black fabric scraps, so we tore it into strips (about 1" wide) and just wrapped it around the wreath, securing the fabric with straight pins. That way you don't have to worry about white styrofoam wreath peeking out between the feathers. That's also what allowed us to get away with a smaller boa.

Step 2: The boa was attached in the same way, just wrapped around the wreath and attached with straight pins. It's a much less stressful way to go about it then using hot glue or something similar, because it's much easier to adjust the boa until you get just the look you want.

Step 3: Last of all, we jabbed those little decorative picks right into the styrofoam and bent them until we got just the look we liked.

Simple right? If you decide to put one together we would love to see it!

{Treats We Love} Shrieky Shakes (Purple Cows)

Orange and black may be the most common Halloween colors, but we think purple and green have become almost as popular over the years. Since it's always more fun to make themed treats around holidays, we thought that our family recipe of Purple Cows, or Shrieky Shakes as we are currently calling them, would be a perfect addition to anyone's Halloween treats!

Purple Cows are simple, with only three ingredients, but they are oh so tasty! Just throw some vanilla ice cream, milk and a little bit of frozen grape juice concentrate in a blender, mix it up and you are in business.

Shrieky Shakes (or Purple Cows)

Ingredients
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream
1/3 cup Milk
1 T Frozen Grape Juice Concentrate

Feel free to add more or less of the grape juice concentrate according to your personal tastes. We usually put the leftover grape juice concentrate in a tupperware container and put it back in the freezer for future purple cows. But you can always just make a slightly smaller pitcher of grape juice instead!

Super simple ingredients...

Make a super delicious treat!

Now doesn't that look just spooky enough?

A Somewhat Spooky "Mantel"

Arizona does have some cooler weather areas, but for the most part our state is pretty warm all year round. Because of that a lot of Arizonans, ourselves included, build or buy houses that don't include a fireplace. While we did enjoy the few nights a year we lit a fire in the fireplace growing up, we really don't think it's worth it to have a fireplace here. The only problem with that decision is that we don't have a pretty mantel to decorate for the holidays! We found that the simplest solution to that problem was to buy a decorative shelf and create our own Arizona "mantel."

As per our usual,  it may not be a super scary "mantel", but it has just enough spook appeal to make it Halloween worthy. Skeletons and skulls just don't have as much of a creepiness factor if they are covered in a colorful glitter, and that's just the way we like it!

How are your mantels decorated this Halloween?

P.S. If you haven't already grabbed your Halloween printable, you can find it here.

A Somewhat Spooky Porch

We love decorating for Halloween, but we tend to gravitate more towards the cute or glittery end of the decorating spectrum, rather than the scary or gory end. So it shouldn't be too surprising that while there are "boiling" cauldrons and bats, the critters haunting our porch this Halloween are more of the friendly type!

We would love to see how you guys are decorating this year!

{Treats We Love} Caramel Dip

It's finally starting to feel like we are through with Summer! The Arizona winters are wonderful, but we sure don't see much of Autumn! As the nights are finally getting cooler and the Halloween decor is creeping into the yards of our neighbors, I find myself feeling the “need” to start making autumn treats for my friends and family!

The first of many treats/recipes we are looking forward to sharing, are you ready?.....is Canned Caramel! It’s super easy to make and super yummy!

Caramel Dip Recipe

Ingredients:

Sweetened Condensed Milk

After removing the labels and adhesive from the cans, place as many cans as you would like into a large pot of water, making sure the water covers the top of the cans {I suggest purchasing a brand with the pull-top lids}. Boil the cans for 2 1/2 hours. Be sure to keep a close eye on the cans to ensure the cans remain covered with water, and add hot water as needed. Remove and cool completely {best if cooled overnight}. When you wake up the next morning, your caramel will be ready and waiting to enjoy or share!

Download recipe card here.

Enjoy!

{Lil' Frankie Stein}

We love all of the glass block projects out there, and while we have vinyl cutters, we also think it's nice to have projects that don't depend on everyone else having one. This cute Lil' Frankie Stein is made without using any vinyl at all. We love our goofy little guy and hope some of you get a kick out of him too!

{Supplies}
Mod Podge {both gloss and sparkle}
glass block {with pre-drilled hole}
Lil' Frankie pattern {download here}
green paper
black paper {card stock will work, but it is harder to use, it's not flexible.}
sponge brush
scissors
grey craft paint
spray varnish
light set: green or clear {I found green at Walgreens for $3.99.}
cork “bolts” {for side of his head, NOT pictured, I hadn’t gotten to JoAnn's or Michaels to buy some.}
strong adhesive {to attach the bolts}
freezer paper: optional {it made a great work surface while I was creating... the project didn’t get glued to my working surface. And it cleaned up nicely!}
PDF of Instructions w/ Pattern {download here}
  1. Print pattern and trace onto black paper and cut out black shapes - set aside for later. {side note- all I had was black card stock... probably could be found at craft store in the scrapbook section, but the paper would need to be completely black not white in the core of the sheet.}
  2. Clean/dust the block and remove any adhesive from the label.
  3. With the gloss Mod Podge, glue torn pieces of the green paper over the entire block, glueing only the backs down.
  4. After green has had time to dry, {doesn’t take very long} mod podge the hair and face onto the block. After face is dry, finish the rest of his hair/head by using the same torn pieces method that you used with the green. I didn’t think to take a picture, but I applied his hair half -way down along the sides and about half-way down the back of his head, so all sides meet up nicely and look like a head of hair.
  5. In between coats of mod podge, take a minute to paint the corks grey.
  6. After all paper has been mod podged with the gloss formula, cover entire surface with the sparkle Mod Podge. I laid mine down face up and did the sides and top first. Then when the front was dry I turned him over and did his back.
  7. Attach “bolt”s with adhesive.
  8. Spray with varnish.
  9. “Stuff” him with his lights and enjoy!
